It's about that time... Olympics 2012!

It's getting close to that time again! The Olympics!! This year the games will be held in London. Such an exciting time. I've been watching the Olympics Trials on TV.  Yep, I just sit back on the couch, eating chips, cookies, candy, celery, carrots & broccoli, and watch these young kids, who have been training for years for this moment, give it their all.

I would love to attend the Olympics in person. The closest I've been was in 1984 in San Diego, CA. I was able to watch one of the torch carriers run by on their way to Los Angeles.

The Olympics is the ONLY time that I'm highly interested in watching all the events. Especially the ones that I wouldn't normally watch, such as--synchronized swimming, water polo, and weightlifting. And who knew badminton could be SO competitive?!?!
It's just fascinating to watch them go at it! I actually cheer them on!  I always watch, swimming, diving and rowing.  Michael Phelps & Ryan Lochte are sure to bring the excitment.

However, my favorites are gymnastics and track & field. I'm pretty much glued to the TV when either of these events are on.   I'm just rooting for Gabby Douglas, she's just a little doll. I hope she does well. Sprinters Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake will be interesting to watch. I'm rooting for Bolt, but you never know, there could be lots of upsets.
But in the end, it shows discipline, dedication, and preparation. What is your favorite Olympic sport?

Blessings!

Nostalgia...the good old days

A dear friend of mine put a picture of her front porch on her facebook page. Basically saying she was taking time out from her hectic life and learning to relax on her front porch. Well, that really got me thinking about my childhood. Yes, a front porch brought back many memories. I mentioned how when we were little we could never get away with doing stuff. There was always someone's mom sitting on the front porch watching what was going on and always ready to call your parents and tell them when you were up to some shenanigans.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness.... Oops wait, that's the opening line from 'A Tale of Two Cities'...LOL  but  I digress, childhood was such a fun time of exploration and adventure. But as they say, times are a changing. It's pretty rare these days to be without a cellphone. Even if I forget my cell at home, I go back home and get it. I feel lost without it. How did we survive before cellphones?

During my childhood there were no cellphones. Yet, my parents ALWAYS could get in touch with me. I don't care if I was playing in the park, riding my bike over a friends house, in the school's parking lot, on the playground. If your parents needed you to come home, they found a way to get a message to you.

I call it the 'messenger method'. It always started out with your parents saying to someone passing by..."have you seen..." if the person said, yes, the response would be 'well, tell them I said it's time to come home.'If the person said, no, the response would be 'well, if you see them, tell I said it's time to come home.'  LOL! Somehow, this 'message' would work it's way to you and the funny thing is that it never took very long to get through the grapevine.

We never wore bike helmets, yet we were probably the biggest daredevils around, especially if you were around during the Evel Knievel era. (the original XTreme sports guy) I remember once, my sister talked me into sitting on the front of her bicycle handlebars while we rode down a steep hill. Halfway down the hill, she let go of the handlebars and put her arms in the air and shouted "Weeeeeee" Yes, you're probably thinking 'uh,oh'. And Uh, Oh is right, We crashed! I had a gash in my knee so deep, I swear I saw the bone.

I showed my mother and the first thing out of her mouth was not...OMG let's get you to the doctor... it was...well, why were you silly enough to get on the handlebars, go put a paper towel on it. LOL!! yep, that was it...no ER visit...and surprisingly I survived!

When I went fishing with my father on the weekends, I ate Vienna sausages, spam, sardines, bologna and drank lots of soda. Surprisingly, my cholesterol is not too bad. We ate gobs of candy & junk food from the corner store, and yet we stayed slim. But I'm guessing during those days, especially in the summer we probably put in 20-30 miles a day either by foot or on our bikes.

I sometime wonder what would happen to the kids today if they were forced to spend all day outside. Or, heaven forbid, have to walk a few miles to a friends house. Uh, I don't think they'd do it LOL!! But then on the other hand I don't think we had as many crazies running around that would try and snatch us up!

Times are a changing...

1 Year Blogiversary!!

Well, time sure flies when you're having fun!

It's hard to believe that I've been blogging for 1 year!!

Let's see, I guess I'll need to make some goals for the 2nd year.

1) Spend more quality time reading bible.

2) Snag another publishing contract!

3) Lose weight--bikini ready by next summer! (hmm, I think I had this same goal last year. LOL!!)

4) Finish my current manuscript.

5) Complete rough draft of at least 2 more manuscripts.  (I actually have 6 books outlined ready to start)

6) Maintain healthy eating habits.

7) Compete in a 5k.

8) Be more aware of the words that I speak. Stay positive, cancel the negative.

9) Teach my dog some tricks.

10) Write, write, write!!!

Blessings!

My New Best Friend...

Say hello to my little friend...

Oh, yeah!!

Introducing my new best friend!

Sennheiser CXC 700 Active Noise-Canceling Ear-Canal Headphones

This is by far the greatest thing ever invented since, since, since....Pizza!

When I write, there are times when I need quiet--no TV, talking, radio, nothing... or else I'll get distracted and lose my train of thought.  Well, at times this is not entirely possible. Especially since I'm not the only one in the household.

One evening I was in the office trying to write and the basketball game was on...well, hubby had the volume on HIGH BLAST!! So, instead of me focusing on my manuscript, I was actually thinking about the game.

Enter my new best friend--Sennheiser CXC 700 Active Noise-Canceling Ear-Canal Headphone-- Same scenario...put these things in my ear, turn on the power...and presto, chango....................SILENCE.

It has a cool little 'talk through' button you can press, if you want to hear whats going on around you. I had them on the other day while the game was on and it sounded like this.

LeBron James, for the steal, heading down court and he *presses button*.........................................................*presses button again*....what an awesome move by the Heat.  Woo Hoo!!

I love these earphones so much and wish I could wear them all the time. Wouldn't it be great to silence anything or anyone you didn't want to hear.

The co-worker who always complains about everything. "oh and another thing, I was over my mother-in-laws house, and lemme tell you what she said. *presses button*............................................................................................................................*presses button again*..okay, well, thanks for listening, we'll have to talk again soon.

The doctor's office. "Overall you're in good shape, but step up on the scale, let's see how much you weigh, oh, wow, you weigh. *presses button*........................................................................................................................*presses button again* Okay, well, we'll see you at your next visit.

The car repair shop for an oil change. "Let me show you what your filter looks like, I think you need to *presses button*............................................................................................................................................*presses button again* we'll just do the oil change for you.

Just a great little gadget if you need quiet time to study, write, work, etc. Especially, if you travel, this would silence all the crying kids, plane engines, loud talking,  a/c noise.

Okay, so you get the point :)

Blessings!!

Memorial Day...

A day of remembrance for all the servicemen and women who have lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

This weekend marks the official start of summer with cookouts, family gatherings and visits to cemeteries across the United States.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the servicemen and women who are across the ocean fighting in wars and protecting the country.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these servicemen and women. All the waiting and uncertainty that you face each day. Not knowing if your loved ones are safe, and patiently awaiting their long overdue arrival.

War is a necessary evil that we must endure. At times necessary and seems like other times, you can't help but wonder, why?

Whether we agree or disagree with war. We must remember the ones who gave their lives for us.  These servicemen and women are our fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, nieces, nephews. Some experienced, some still in their teens. But they're out there on the front line for you.

Take a moment out this weekend and offer up prayers, write a letter, or offer support to the families.

No, Freedom isn't free
-written by-
CDR Kelly Strong, USCG (Ret)
I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of taps one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That taps had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Why do you do what you do?

The dinner guests just raved about how good that ham tasted. Finally, one of the guests asked her host what her secret was to preparing such a succulent tasting ham!

She replied that her special secret was that just before cooking, she trimmed off both ends of the ham. "And why do you do that," the inquisitive guest asked?

The proud host then explained, "Well, that's how my mother taught me to cook it. That's the way I have been doing it for years, and it always comes out delicious."

Not satisfied, the curious one pressed on. "But why did she trim off both ends of the ham? How in the world does that make it taste so good?"

"I really don't know," the host replied. "I've never thought about it. But I'll ask her, and I will get back with you."

The next day she called her mom and asked why she trimmed the ends off the ham before cooking, hoping to get some secret cooking answer. But her mom was no help at all. "Why, honey, that's just how your grandmother taught me. She always did it that way, and her ham was always delicious," she answered. "Why don't you ask her?"

Feeling like she was now on a quest for something very important, she indeed called her grandmother and asked the same question. Much to her dismay, she got the same answer. Grandma simply said, "Oh my dear, that's just way my mother taught me."

Now desperate for an answer, she called her great-grandmother and asked, "Why did you trim both ends off of a ham before cooking it? Does it cook better that way? Does it have something to do with the juices?"

The wise old lady replied, "Oh sweetie, cutting the ends off of a ham has absolutely nothing to do with any of those things."

"But then why did you cut the ends off?" the young lady asked, now very puzzled.

She answered, "I trimmed the ends off so it would fit into my pan!"

Why do you do what you do?  Have you ever thought about it?
When you prepare your holiday dinners, are you preparing the food the same way as your mother or grandmother prepared it?  For me, some dishes are the same as my mother's. Others I've tweaked or created my own version.

What about running your household, or raising the kids. Are you mimicking your mother's ways?
What about your attire? When you go shopping for clothes, have you ever put something back on the rack after thinking your mother would never approve of you wearing something like that? :)  I've not done that, but I was once friends with a woman who would.

I'd picked out a pretty red dress for her to try on, and she refused to do so, based on the color. She said she was taught proper ladies do not wear the color red. So, of course I asked why.   I later found out that meant, no red lipstick, nail polish, no red anything! She said her mother nor grandmother have never worn the color and it means you're a loose woman! LOL!  I was thinking, well maybe it just wasn't their color? Not everyone looks good in red.

I think you have the right to wear, eat, do whatever you want. But there are times when I hear about certain traditions or ways of life.  I just can't help but wonder.

Why do you do what you do?

Happy Mother's Day!!!

To all the mom's out there!! Happy Mother's Day!!
I'd like to wish my mother a very special mother's day! She's 84 years young!

"No Love Like a Mother's Love"
Jill Lemming

There is no love, like a mother's love,
no stronger bond on earth...
like the precious bond that comes from God,
to a mother, when she gives birth.

A mother's love is forever strong,
never changing for all the time...
and when her children need her most,
a mother's love will shine.

God bless these special mothers,
God bless them every one...
for all the tears and heartache,
and for the special work they've done.

When her days on earth are over,
a mother's love lives on...
through many generations,
with God's blessings on each one.

Be thankful for our mothers,
for they love with a higher love...
from the power God has given,
and the strength from up above.

Blessings!!
